The CBSE was given its present name ‘Central Board of Secondary Education’s in the year 1952. The Board was reconstituted in the year 1962 when its jurisdiction was extended. Education being a subject on the concurrent list of Indian constitution – most of the states also have their own educational boards with different curriculum.

The CBSE is the main apex board which is not only having a pan Indian jurisdiction but also has global presence with  nearly 141 affiliated schools across 21 countries. 

The Board grants affiliation to Schools up to higher secondary level and develops common curriculum keeping nationwide requirements in focus.  The affiliation is considered as a prestigious recognition as it requires the schools to follow rigid quality standards.

The CBSE affiliation is internationally accepted. The CBSE carries out continuous research and development for the advancement of the academic standards in the country. It has recently introduced the Grading System based on continuous and comprehensive evaluation (CCE).

Board of High School and Intermediate Education was the first Board set up in India in the year 1921 with jurisdiction over Rajputana, Central India and Gwalior. Again in the year 1929 the then Government of India suggested to set up a joint Board in 1929 for all the areas which was named as the ‘ Board of High School and Intermediate Education, Rajputana. This included Ajmer, Merwara, Central India and Gwalior. This was done in response to the representation made by the Government of United Provinces. Over time -the Board witnessed rapid growth and expansion at the level of Secondary education resulting in improved quality and standard of education in its affiliated institutions.

With the advent of State Universities and State Boards in various parts of the country the jurisdiction of the Board was confined only to Ajmer, Bhopal and Vindhya Pradesh later. As a result of this, in 1952 , the constitution of the Board was amended wherein its jurisdiction was extended to part-C and Part-D territories and the Board was given its present name ‘Central Board of Secondary Education’.
